CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Charlottetown continues to remain at the top of its game as a hosting destination on the national sport scene. SCORE has taken the opportunity to capitalize on the numerous Canada Games competitions that are being hosted in the Capital, networking with officials from the many National Sport Organizations who are observing the Games.

Mayor Clifford Lee and Wayne Long, Events Development Officer for the City of Charlottetown and lead of the SCORE initiative, have been meeting with key national sport professionals to promote Charlottetown as a destination of choice, emphasizing the many high quality sport facilities the city has to offer.

"Our city values the role sport serves in creating a balanced and economically stimulated community," remarked Mayor Clifford Lee. "It is very important that we continue to position Charlottetown as a premier sport tourism destination and forge many strong partnerships while continuing to grow the market, bringing millions of new dollars in economic impact to our community," added Mayor Lee.

The SCORE brand is highly recognized and respected at the national level resulting in ongoing event attraction success for Charlottetown. In April 2009, Wayne Long was selected as the recipient of the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Industry Builder of the Year Award, an accolade awarded due in part to Charlottetown's resounding hosting success.

Sport tourism in Charlottetown has a strong and exciting future, with a number of regional, national and international sport events already confirmed and some yet to be announced for the capital city. These events will create substantial tourism and economic stimulation.

"Tourism Charlottetown is proud to be a partner in SCORE," said Tourism Charlottetown President, Doug Newson. "With a number of Canada Games competitions taking place in our city, Charlottetown is poised to further capture increased sport tourism business," added Newson.
