AUS WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP COMING TO CHARLOTTETOWN

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – UPEI Athletic Director, Ron Annear; Charlottetown Mayor, Clifford Lee; and Tourism Charlottetown President, Kevin Murphy announced today that the 2007 Atlantic University Sport Women’s Soccer Championship will be hosted in Charlottetown this fall at the University of Prince Edward Island from November 2nd-4th.

The Atlantic University Sport Women’s Soccer Championship will feature six teams, with the winner moving on to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship.  The AUS Championship is the showcase event for female soccer in Atlantic Canada, with some of the top players in the country participating.

"UPEI Athletics is proud to once again partner with SCORE! to host a leading sporting event,” stated UPEI Athletic Director, Ron Annear.  “Hosting the AUS Women’s Soccer Championship will allow UPEI to build on its event hosting successes, while raising the profile of UPEI Athletics and giving back to the community.”

“We are thrilled to host the AUS Women’s Soccer Championship in Charlottetown. The economic benefits from hosting sporting events are impressive,” said Mayor Clifford Lee.  “The attraction of major sporting events, such as this Championship, is supported by the efforts of the SCORE! initiative, along with great community partnerships with organizations like the University of Prince Edward Island.”

SCORE! continually pursues opportunities with partners to host regional, national and international sporting events in Charlottetown.  The City of Charlottetown and Tourism Charlottetown recognize the value of the events sector and is placing high priority on sporting events to stimulate tourism, economic and community growth.
