May 25, 2004

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Mayor Clifford Lee in conjunction with the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association announced today that the 2006 National Midget Hockey Championship will be hosted in Charlottetown from April 24th – 30th.

Hockey Canada’s 2004 Annual General Meeting, which was attended by over 400 delegates from across Canada, concluded on Tuesday in Thunder Bay, Ontario with confirmation on locations of 2006 National Championships.

The National Midget Hockey Championship (since 1974 and formally known as the Wrigley National Midget Hockey Championship and the Air Canada Cup National Midget Hockey Championship) is held on a yearly basis with six teams participating: Host, Atlantic, Quebec, Central, Western and Pacific. The tournament is structured with a round-robin format and is held over a one-week period. The event is the only national minor hockey championship in Canada. The championship game is broadcasted live on TSN.

A tradition of excellence and pride has been adopted by Host Organizing Committee's in the past, continually building on a successful event. The Canadian Hockey Association's goal is to lend as much support as possible to the Host Committee each year to help them attain their goal of running an event that not only provides the competing teams a valuable experience, but leaves a legacy supporting our national game in their community.

Mayor Lee noted, “Charlottetown is recognized as premiere event destination, and we are so pleased to host this Championship and have the opportunity to showcase our hospitality to participants, officials, sponsors and fans.”

The Championship will take place at the Charlottetown Civic Centre with the Charlottetown Islanders Major Midget AAA Hockey Club as the host team.
